Check out what Paul Hostetter has to say about mahogany on this page on his website. Paul is a respected builder and repairman who has worked on his share of vintage instruments.

Make sure and read the part starting with "Top (and maybe body) options" and pay attention to the part about african mahoganies. It is pretty interesting and kind of flies in the face of convention. Has anyone else here noticed the same thing?
